Thriller Conventions

Your next analytical task is to write a report on the codes and conventions of the Thriller genre.

  • A crime at the core of the narrative (often murder, but not necessarily - if not, what?).
  • A complex narrative structure with plot twists.
  • Themes of identity... (mistaken identity, lost identity, secret identity etc)
  • Themes of voyeurism.
  • Protagonist with a ‘flaw’ which is exploited by the antagonist.
  • Titles often reflect a theme of the film.
  • There is often a scene near the end of the film in which the protagonist is in peril.
  • Mise en scene which reflects the protagonist’s struggle... (busy streets for confusion, deserts for isolation etc)
Chose a thriller film you know and analyse how it either follows or disregards these conventions.

Write it as a Word document.

Include pictures.
